The owner of the circus in my story,”Aldar and the Golem of Prague,” tells Aldar that the circus gave up using wild animals because it was cruel, even though it meant a drop in attendance.  Unfortunately many circuses think about the bottom line before the welfare of their animals.

Good news is the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, thanks mainly to local governments responding to pressure from caring individuals, will retire all its touring elephants in May.
